The corridor

Work in the corridor should be placed in your own classroom storage or in room 306 on Thursday & Friday.

Classrooms

All the classrooms should be clean.

Paint the dirty marks on the walls (not whole walls, 7 groups have to share a limited amount of paint).

Furniture

Superfluous furniture can be stored:

In the storage area near the fire escape

Table tops & table legs in the wheeled crates

In 306 if there is still space

We would like to keep the top of the stairs free for temporary storage of works that need to go down to the container

Work

Place your work in your classroom storage, no work should be left in the main classroom area, including windowsills, sink counters and above the vitrines.

Put extra large pieces in 306 on Thursday afternoon from 13.00 onwards. Follow the instructions posted on the door & leave a space free for a teacher’s meeting table.

Take note:

There are orientation courses on Saturday, 17 December, so it is NOT possible for students with the first presentations on Monday to install works on this day. The school building is open on weekdays at 8.00.

All your work should be thrown away or taken home after your assessment, on the same day.

During the assessment days a path of 2 meters should be kept free in the corridor at all times.

Protocol for the upcoming assessments

Protocol Assessment.

The function of the Christmas assessment is to judge whether there have been enough results and development during your study in the first semester and whether you are capable of finishing the study in the Basisjaar successfully. At the end of the year, you will be again evaluated as to whether we consider you to be ready to continue on in one of the departments of the higher years.

For the assessment you are asked to build up an exhibition in a classroom. Be absolutely on time to do this, you have only about an hour to install your works before your scheduled presentation time.

You need to show all relevant work of the last period. That is to say, not just what you consider to be your best (finished) works, but also that which illustrates the process and development such as sketches, photos and early try-outs of ideas.

All of you need to be there throughout the day to help each other out with installing, clean-up and moral support.

The assessment committee consists out of your mentor, your other teachers and an independent chairman (a mentor teacher from another class group). This committee will visit your exhibition and the chairman will lead the assessment. He/she will invite your teachers to comment upon the works and your development and may ask you for brief explanations.

The committee then withdraws to make up a report. The report consists out of the individual evaluations from each of your teachers plus a final common evaluation. Next to the written comments, you will also get a mark or grade: sufficient, doubtful or insufficient.

After your teachers have completed the report, you are invited to hear the result. You will then be asked to photocopy the report, keep the copy for yourself and return the original directly to the teachers.

In the case of a negative (insufficient) evaluation, you will receive after the assessment what’s called a Binding Study Advice. This is an official warning sent to you where we ask you to consider seriously whether you should continue your study. If no significant improvements have taken place by the end of the school year, you will be given the binding advice that you may not continue to study at the Rietveld.

After your presentation, all your work must be removed from the third floor, you must either directly bring it home or dispose of it in the special containers set up for this purpose. You may not store these works any longer at school, as space must be made for the second semester. The third floor must be left clean after the assessments!

We sincerely ask you to do the best you can to make a good exhibition and we wish you much success.

-You can bring your own towel or rent one at the hostel for 1 euro

-Label your luggage with your name and group

Do a bit of research beforehand of places you might like to visit on your own. You might want either buy or borrow a travel book from the

library.

Breakfast every morning and one dinner with the whole basisjaar is included in your excursion fee. Your class group will also get a limited budget for another dinner together along with the teachers in your group. You need to bring enough money to cover your lunch and other dinners. We will be distributing 7 day public transportation cards as well as 3 day museum cards to everyone.

A more detailed program will be distributed to you in the bus.

THE CORRIDOR
All the work in the corridor has to be stored in the classroom storage spaces.

CLASSROOMS
All the classrooms should be clean.

Paint the dirty marks on the walls (not whole walls, 7 groups have to share a limited amount of paint).

FURNITURE
Superfluous furniture can be stored neatly in the back of room 306.

Folding supports (schragen) and wooden tabletops can be stored in the wheeled crates in the corridor.

Easels can be put next to the stairs.

WORK
Place your work in your classroom storage, no work should be left in the main classroom area, including windowsills, sink counters and above the vitrines.

Put extra large pieces in 306 from 10.00 onwards Thursday 9 December. Follow the instructions posted on the door & leave a space free for a teacher’s meeting table.

Take note:
Sorry, it is not possible to pre-install your works on Saturday, the Orientation course still has classes on 11 December.

All your work should be thrown away or taken home after your assessment, on the same day.

Protocol for the Christmas Assessment (Beoordeling)

1.
The function of the Christmas assessment is to judge whether there have been enough results and development during your study in the first semester and whether you are capable of finishing the study in the Basisjaar successfully. At the end of the year, you will be again evaluated as to whether we consider you to be ready to continue on in one of the departments of the higher years.

2.
For the assessment you are asked to build up an exhibition in a classroom. Be absolutely on time to do this, you have only about an hour to install your works before your scheduled presentation time.
You need to show all relevant work of the last period. That is to say, not just what you consider to be your best (finished) works, but also that which illustrates the process and development such as sketches, photos and early try-outs of ideas.

3.
All of you need to be there throughout the day to help each other out with installing, clean-up and moral support.

4.
The assessment committee consists out of your mentor, your other teachers and an independent chairman (a mentor teacher from another class group). This committee will visit your exhibition and the chairman will lead the assessment. He/she will invite your teachers to comment upon the works and your development and may ask you for brief explanations.

5.
The committee then withdraws to make up a report. The report consists out of the individual evaluations from each of your teachers plus a final common evaluation. Next to the written comments, you will also get a mark or grade: sufficient, doubtful or insufficient.
After your teachers have completed the report, you are invited to hear the result. You will then be asked to photocopy the report, keep the copy for yourself and return the original directly to the teachers.

6.
In the case of a negative (insufficient) evaluation, you will receive after the assessment what’s called a Binding Study Advice. This is an official warning sent to you where we ask you to consider seriously whether you should continue your study. If no significant improvements have taken place by the end of the school year, you will be given the binding advice that you may not continue to study at the Rietveld.

7.
After your presentation, all your work must be removed from the third floor, you must either directly bring it home or dispose of it in the special containers set up for this purpose. You may not store these works any longer at school, as space must be made for the second semester. The third floor must be left clean after the assessments!

8.
We sincerely ask you to do the best you can to make a good exhibition and we wish you much success.

Arjan de Koomen currently teaches at the University of Amsterdam and his areas of specialty are:

Announcement 15-27 November room inventory taking place

Dear all,

From 15^th of November till 27^th of November the second round on behalf of the space inventory will take place in the two buildings of the Rietveld Academy. From Monday till Friday during openings hours of the academy and on Saturday during daytime 2 students (selected out of a mix of students from ASA uitzendbureau) will go round the building, check rooms to count the people in the rooms and see how it is being used. This students can be recognized by a vest with the text: Brink groep. They will wear a badge with their name as well.

In some cases they will knock at the door, peek into the room, or ask a small question, but in general they will not have to bother you.

I hope you are all willing to cooperate. If you do not want to be
disturbed in your work, please put a very clear note at the door with
the amount of people inside and the sort of meeting you are in. Take
notice of the fact that it has to be removed as the meeting is finished.

On Friday 12 and Saturday 13 November 2010, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Flemish Arts Centre ‘De Brakke Grond’, will be staging Rietveld UnCut for the second time. The theme for this year’s event is: ‘Past, Present, Future’. In addition to the Open Day and the Graduation Show, this is the third major occasion on which the academy presents itself to the outside world in all its many facets.

SupervisedUnder the inspirational leadership ofSuper by the inspirational visual artist Maze de Boer (1976) and Flemish moral philosopher and journalist Ann Meskens (1965), Rietveld UnCut is unlike any other Rietveld event. Rietveld UnCut seeks interaction with the audience. Students will reflect on their own position as up-and-coming artists. They will reflect on the specific discipline they have chosen, on their predecessors at the Rietveld Academie and on their future prospects. Rietveld UnCut is a performance, an installation and a playfield. Rietveld UnCut is what you yourself make of it.

7:50 at Departure Hall 1, near the Vueling check in counter at Schiphol!

Be on time! If you miss the flight, you will NOT get a refund. Students living outside of Amsterdam should consider sleeping over at a classmate’s house within Amsterdam on Sunday night to avoid any train delay problems. Give yourself a wide time margin to come on time.

Departure time is is 10.20. We arrive in Valencia at 12.45.

The coordination has the booking confirmation for the whole group.

A program folder will be distributed to you on the plane.

Don’t forget:

-Your valid passport + 2 photocopies of it with you as requested earlier

-Baggage rules (find further details on the Vueling site)

Check –in baggage: up to 23 kg & no more than a total of 2 liters liquid/gel . Each liquid/gel container may not exceed 500 ml.

Hand baggage: max 10 kg & 55x40x20 & no more than 1 liter total liquid/gel. Each liquid/gel item must be less than 100 ml. & everything must fit in a 1 liter plastic zip bag.

-Camera + batteries + chargers

-Cell phones + chargers for texting each other (put your classmates cell nrs. on

your phone if you haven’t done so already & don’t forget the +31 country code)

-If you are on prescription medications don’t forget them!

-Put your name & group on your luggage. This saves confusion when we unload

the buses & check into the hostels.

-Things to occupy yourself with on the bus between Valencia & Murcia:

i-pods/mp3 players
books, magazines
sketchbook & sketch materials
cards or other portable games
A small travel pillow for the bus helps make it more comfortable to sleep.

-Spain is notorious for pickpockets! Make sure you have a secure place close to

your body for your valuables! We highly recommend buying one of those

security neck pouches or hip bags for your passport & money. If you lose your

passport, it will be a huge problem to fly back home!

-Take care of each other! Have a buddy system or travel in groups at all times!

-Swimsuit & towel if you want to swim at the beach in Valencia

-Comfortable shoes because you will be walking A LOT

-Student card for reduced museum entries

-We don’t recommend that you bring your laptops unless you feel like carrying

them with you the whole time. Do not leave your valuables in the hostel!

-Carry some health insurance info with you

-Arrange travel insurance for yourself if you have expensive equipment

-Photocopy your important documents (passport, bank pass, insurance card),

leave one copy at home or with a trusted person & bring one copy with you!

-Do a bit of research on the internet beforehand of places you might like to

The next Art History Lecture will he held on Thursday, 7 October at 13.30 in the GYM.

Our speaker for the coming 2 lectures is Steven ten Thije:Steven ten Thije is a researcher who holds an MA in both Art History and Philosophy. He previously taught art theory at the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam. Ten Thije is currently working on a PhD at the Hildesheim University, Hildesheim, supported by the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. His doctoral research focuses on the development of collection display in museums for modern and contemporary art in the second half of the twentieth century. In relation to this research, he also functions as a research curator for Play Van Abbe, a large exhibition program which started in November 2009. In addition, ten Thije is a thesis supervisor at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. He has written articles for journals such as De Witte Raaf and has contributed to other catalogs and art publications, such as the book Once Is Nothing. Individual Systems (part of the joint contribution of the Van Abbemuseum and BAK to the Brussels Biennial in 2008). Ten Thije lives and works in Amsterdam and Eindhoven.

What Steven will be discussing:In the mid-19th century Nietzsche described the knowledge of history as a ‘costly superfluity’ and ‘luxury’, that must be ‘seriously hated by us’, in his polemical ‘On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life’. Today his claim still resounds, but in a different way. Internet technology and a globalized world have made extensive knowledge of one ‘western’ historical tradition seem outdated and biased. Understanding the world no longer exists in the form of reciting the grand history of yesteryears. However, art students trained today far away in the west will have a difficult time coming to terms with this seemingly outdated practice of historiography. It has determined the practice of art in many ways beyond the obvious form of history painting. In two lectures we will try to measure the depth of the historical infection and think about a proper use of history. Steven's second lecture will be on Thursday, 21 October after the excursion. The first Art History Lecture will be held on Thursday, 23 September at 13.3o in the GYM.

The guest speaker for the first two lectures is Jan Pieter Glerum.

Jan Pieter Glerum is a reknown auctioneer and one of the top experts on the international art market from the Netherlands. He has studied art history, worked for Sotheby's and established his own auction house. Furthermore, he has written several books about art, antiquities and auctioning, among them, 'Aan tafel' (At the Table) which discusses dining habits and the furniture and utensils used throughout the centuries in different cultures.

His first lecture on 23 September is entitled ‘Art and the market’
